29. ‘There is no law without exception’ Lev 10:12-20 Aug 29 Thu QT

Observation and meditation on the text

Moses gave to Aaron’s remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, the grain offering left over which was the food offering prepared without yeast. He also gave them the breast which was waved and the thigh that was presented as their regular share. Moses also gave them the goat of the sin offering, but he found out that it had already been burned up. Since they did not obey the regulations, Moses got angry with Eleazar and Ithamar. However, at that critical moment, Aaron made an intervention between Moses and his sons. He pleaded to Moses that he had already lost his 2 sons even though they sacrificed offerings to the Lord; how could they bear the sins of the people and ate the offerings as they felt they might also be unqualified? Moses was satisfied by his confession.

I hear the voice of the Lord through QT

God allowed the priests to eat the left-over from the offerings as their food after burned them. Since the priests were not endowed with land inheritance, the Lord provided them with food when they served the Lord. At the same time by eating the left-over from the offerings, the priests bore the sins of the worshiper, and should take away their guilt by eating them up. Priests should live according to the decrees of the Lord. However, Eleazar and Ithamar witnessed their own brother priests were killed by God by not observing the law. Out of fear of the Lord, they dare could not eat the offerings, and they burnt them up. In other words, they were not sure of their qualification to bear the sins of the sinners as priests, nor to take away their sins from them because they knew they were not perfect either. Even though they broke the regulations of the Lord, they were pardoned by their father Aaron’s intercession that they were afraid of the Lord whether they would break the law again like their two brothers by eating the food.

Decisions and applications

There is no rule without exception. Even though I may break the law, God still penetrates my motivation. God searches the heart and mind (Je 17:10, 20:12). If I have a genuine and sincere motivation to please the Lord deep down in my heart and mind, God will understand my shortcomings. Recently, one person confessed that he was hurt by what I said to him because it was not what he said. Before the Lord, I never told any lie, but the truth, but I was misunderstood and I was told that I was the one who misunderstood what he said. What can I do? Keep on defending myself? No! The Lord knows it and I can commit everything to the Lord. ‘So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good’ (I Pet 4:19).
